How to Hasten His Coming

By Ray Foster

The delay in Christ's second coming is caused by our not being ready to meet Jesus face to face. The way we become ready to meet Jesus face to face is to have His character fully developed in us. Character likeness to Jesus is developed day by day through resisting everything that would detract and cooperating with everything that would develop His character in us. The more we develop and reflect the character of Jesus the more we hasten His coming again. It is sin that separates us from Jesus. (Is.59:2) It is living the life of Jesus day by day that develops character-likeness to Jesus. This is how we are washed in the blood of Jesus. Our daily prayer should be:

"Keep me by Thy power; let not my feet slide; let not my heart be filled with ambitious plans to exalt myself. . . . Teach me how to practice the art of self-emptying in order to be supplied with the grace of Christ and have that love Christ prayed that I might have, "as I have loved you" (John 13:34). I must receive grace that I may supply others with that grace. Oh, give my soul much nearness to God, that I may receive His disposition and love my brethren. Help me, O Lord, to realize that I am of myself unable to do anything in its true, pure bearings. Self, self, will be continually active for recognition, even in the very holiest of exercises. . . ." {HP 220.3}

This mature character-likeness to Jesus is pictured in Scripture as "having His Father’s name written in their foreheads" Revelation 14:1 It is also pictured in Revelation 7:3 as having "sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads." The first coming of Jesus was time-dependant (When the fullness of time was come, God sent forth His Son. Galations 4:4). However, the second coming is maturity-dependant. James 5:7 "Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain."

To pray for and to strive with all our energy and heart for this character development like Jesus is the only activity and is the one activity that will "hasting the coming" (2 Peter 3:12) "[Seeing] then [that] all these things shall be dissolved, what manner [of persons] ought ye to be in [all] holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?" 2 Peter 3:11,12

May we all, with all of our hearts and souls, dedicate ourselves to being like Jesus in character to hasten His coming all that we are able to, by His grace.

"When the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because the harvest is come." Christ is waiting with longing desire for the manifestation of Himself in His church. When the character of Christ shall be perfectly reproduced in His people, then He will come to claim them as His own." {COL 69.1}

"It is the privilege of every Christian not only to look for but to hasten the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, (2 Peter 3:12, margin). Were all who profess His name bearing fruit to His glory, how quickly the whole world would be sown with the seed of the gospel. Quickly the last great harvest would be ripened, and Christ would come to gather the precious grain." {COL 69.2}
