Revelation Chapter 5

5:1 And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.

5:2 And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?

5:3 And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon.

5:4 And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon.

5:5 And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.

5:6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.

5:7 And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne.

5:8 And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four [and] twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.

5:9 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;

5:10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

5:11 And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands;

5:12 Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.

5:13 And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are

in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, [be] unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.

5:14 And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four [and] twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever.

T he focus of attention is now directed to a book that is held in the right hand of God the Father sitting on His throne. Again we would have trouble identifying this book were it not that God has told us by His messenger what this book is.

"The Jewish rulers did not love God; therefore they cut themselves away from Him, and rejected all His overtures for a just settlement. Christ, the Beloved of God, came to assert the claims of the Owner of the vineyard; but the husbandmen treated Him with marked contempt, saying, We will not have this man to rule over us. They envied Christ’s beauty of character. His manner of teaching was far superior to theirs, and they dreaded His success. He remonstrated with them, unveiling their hypocrisy, and showing them the sure results of their course of action. This stirred them to madness. They smarted under the rebukes they could not silence. They hated the high standard of righteousness which Christ continually presented. They saw that His teaching was placing them where their selfishness would be uncloaked, and they determined to kill Him. They hated His example of truthfulness and piety and the elevated spirituality revealed in all He did. His whole life was a reproof to their selfishness, and when the final test came, the test which meant obedience unto eternal life or disobedience unto eternal death, they rejected the Holy One of Israel. When they were asked to choose between Christ and Barabbas, they cried out, "Release unto us Barabbas!" Luke 23:18. And when Pilate asked, "What shall I do then with Jesus?" they cried fiercely, "Let Him be crucified." Matt. 27:22. "Shall I crucify your King?" Pilate asked, and from the priests and rulers came the answer, "We have no king but Caesar." John 19:15. When Pilate washed his hands, saying, "I am innocent of the blood of this just person," the priests joined with the ignorant mob in declaring passionately, "His blood be on us, and on our children." Matt. 27:24, 25. {COL 293.3}

"Thus the Jewish leaders made their choice. Their decision was registered in the book which John saw in the hand of Him that sat upon

the throne, the book which no man could open. In all its vindictiveness this decision will appear before them in the day when this book is unsealed by the Lion of the tribe of Judah." {COL 294.1}

"And I saw in the right hand of Him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals. And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof? And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon" (Revelation 5:1–3). {9MR 7.1}

"There in His open hand lay the book, the roll of the history of God’s providences, the prophetic history of nations and the church. Herein was contained the divine utterances, His authority, His commandments, His laws, the whole symbolic counsel of the Eternal, and the history of all ruling powers in the nations. In symbolic language was contained in that roll the influence of every nation, tongue, and people from the beginning of earth’s history to its close." {9MR 7.2}"

This is the book of records of all who claim to be God’s people. This is the judgment—the investigative judgment that is going on in heaven—that we are privileged to see. This investigative judgment started with the records out of this book of all those who have lived and died professing faith in Jesus. This judgment started October 22, 1844, and continues up to the present time. The seven seals with which the book is sealed indicate fullness, completeness, perfection—which means that there is no other book and no other investigative judgment of those who have named the name of Jesus.

After seeing the book in the right hand of Him that sat on the throne, the question is asked: "Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?" This question is the center of the great controversy between Christ and Satan. Satan claimed to be worthy to enter into the counsels of God as did Jesus. The Father claimed that Michael (Jesus) was His only begotten Son. Jesus was worthy on the basis of inheritance (See Hebrews 1) to enter the inner counsels of heaven with His Father. Satan was excluded. So the question: "Who is worthy?" With respect to this book

pictured in Revelation 5, no being in heaven or earth, other than Christ, was found to be worthy!

Only Jesus has lived the perfect human life. Only Jesus has died the human death of separation from God—the eternal, second death. Thus only Jesus is qualified to open the book and make the judgments of life or death based on the deeds recorded in the book of records. The Lion of the tribe of Judah prevailed to open the book. Jesus is described as the Lamb—"slain from the foundation of the world" (Revelation 13:8), having seven horns—complete power—and seven eyes which are the seven Spirits of God which are sent forth into all the earth—that comes to the throne to take the book out of the hand of God the Father. Then the whole universe breaks forth into rapture and praise. Most space in Revelation 5 is given to the praise of the 24 elders who sing a new song declaring that Jesus is worthy to judge because He was slain and has redeemed them from every kindred, tongue, people, and nation. The whole vast assembly unite in praising: "Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing." The whole universe—heaven and earth—unite in blessing and praising God the Father.

What is the significance of all this praise? There are so many facets of significance that this subject will be the study of all time. One point of significance that we could draw attention to at this point is that this is the judgment. The judgment comes at the end of the great controversy between Christ and Satan. This great controversy ripened into war in heaven. Revelation 12:7. War does not solve revolt! The war in heaven only showed that Christ and His angels were stronger in might and physical power compared to Satan and his angels. The war did not solve the problem in heaven. This is why planet earth was created, to reveal and demonstrate fully to the universe the goodness of God and the nature of His character, law, government and His purposes. Now this has been fully revealed. Now there are no lingering doubts in any intelligent mind. Now sin and Satan can be fully and eternally destroyed, without a ripple of fear or question about how God’s

strange act is a demonstration of His love. For this reason there is great cause for praise now!
