New Year Resolutions

Before we continue with last week’s discussion of some more home remedies for the new century, on this Sunday before the new millenium, and the new year, it may be in order to give thought to New Year Resolutions.

Q. Why do people make New Year Resolutions?

A. I have made new year resolutions because I thought that I could do some things better in the future than I had done in the past.

Q. What would be the best reason for New Year resolutions?

A. The best reason for striving to do better in the future than in the past is for Christ's sake. Jesus loved us enough to lay down His life so we could have another chance to chose to love and serve Him with our whole heart. Gratitude and love and loyalty to Jesus would be the greatest reason for doing His will more faithfully in the future than in the past.

Q. What new year resolutions would you suggest might be considered?

A. A resolution is a very personal thing that is best prompted by the Holy Spirit. I think all of us know better than we do. The area in my life that I would like to concentrate on in this new year and in the new millenium is to center my life off of myself and onto Jesus. This is a life-long project I know, however this is the area that I want to focus more and more on in the new year.

Q. If Jesus were here with us in the studio today and we could ask Him what new year's resolutions He would like us to make - what do you think He would say?

A. That is a good question. I think He would look right into my heart and mind and would be very gentle and very tactful with what ever He would suggest.

Q. Do you think He would ask the question He asked Peter?

A. That is a generic question and very applicable to us all - "Lovest thou me more than these?" I really think that one of the biggest stumbling blocks people have on the way to finding Christ are Christians. And the thing that we as Christians are the least aware of that is the greatest obstruction for others to find Jesus, is our spiritual pride. I can say the words and believe the truth of the words in my heart - but even while I say the truth, in reality pride can co-exist with anything except a vital, daily fresh intimacy with Jesus. That is what I so need. That is what I want this new year.

Q. How does a personal intimacy with Jesus relate to health?

A. Jesus came to give us life and give us more abundant life. That has to include physical life as well as spiritual and mental life.

Q. Are there requirements to receiving Jesus as a personal friend?

A. Very much so. It has been likened to marriage. In order to marry, the requirement is that you forsake all others except the one that you marry. In the same way, to accept friendship and intimacy with Jesus, that means that you must forsake all others from that one supreme place of worship and adoration in your life.

Q. Have we philosophized enough? Are we ready to tackle our next subject for a home remedy?

A. Yes - but just let me say one thing more. There can be no health and no abundant life without Jesus being the Lord and sole Ruler of your life. His will performed is the definition of joy and happiness and peace and contentment.

It reminds me of the trip I made in Africa from the mission hospital across the Zambezi river by outboard motor boat with a bag of money to deposit in the bank. I arrived just as the bank closed for the lunch hour and there I was left outside the bank with a bag full of money to wait an hour to deposit the money. I thought of being mugged and the money taken. But then I committed it to the Lord, and laid down under the shade of the big tree in front of the bank, with a feeling that I did not have a care in the world and just relaxed for an hour. I knew that I was where God wanted me and that He would take care of me and I felt perfectly at peace and was just reveling in one hour of pure rest and delight.

Eczema

Q. Are there other things to be done for eczema other than use steroid creams & lotions?

A. As we mentioned, eczema may be the earliest manifestation of allergies, so therein lies the direction in which one should go.

As far as symptomatic natural healthcare is concerned, aloe vera gel may be applied to the irritated, inflamed areas. However a search for what the body is allergic to or what the irritant is should be sought beyond simply the symptomatic treatment.

Besides aloe vera gel applied to the irritated, inflamed skin, oatmeal baths using one cup of oatmeal powder to a bath tub of water can be quite soothing or you may add one cup of baking soda to a tub of H2O that's approximately 94 to 98 degrees F. Two cups of cornstarch will work well too. To dry the skin, do not rub - blot!

A drop or two of olive oil put in an ordinary bath or a medicated bath gives a thin coating of oil to the skin that will help retain moisture in the skin and relieve itching. Use soaps sparingly. They may irritate the skin. Don't use bubble baths.

Q. But we haven't mentioned what to do about allergies!

A. Because food allergies are a common cause of eczema, one of the most important things would be avoiding the most common allergens. This may well be very helpful. This includes things like cows' milk, eggs, chocolate, citrus, and wheat.

There are other pieces of information that may be helpful & if you would like to have this, give us a call now on the air at (206) 777 0083 or during office hours at (206) 935 5696 or toll free 1 (888) 841 4987. We have lots of books and printed materials for sale and some for free.

Headaches

Q. The cause of headaches seems to be hard to find, don't you think?

A. Well, once again, headaches tend to reflect a disorder in the body somewhere & the underlying cause may be so subtle, that it requires persistent effort but this is worthwhile, to help this very common, and in some cases, debilitating problem.

Q. This is so broad a subject, do you think we can do it justice in these few minutes?

A. Probably not, so what I'd like to do is give a few tips for treating an acute headache while the search by you or your doctor for the underlying cause is going on. Remember, that's what we're all about at NEWSTART Healthcare, so give us a call if you have had a problem with headaches and have not been able to find the cause. Remember symptomatic treatment is not curative. Treating the symptoms only makes it feel better while you find out the cause of the problem.

Here are a few tips for headaches - remember this is not a cure nor does this take the place of seeking qualified, poersonal medical advice:

Consider taking a hot mustard foot bath with an ice cap or cold compress to the head for twenty minutes or more at the very beginning of the headache.

Q. Two questions - what does that do and how do you give yourself a mustard foot bath?

A. Too much blood in the head is the generic pathology for headaches. Of course it needs to be found out why you have too much blood in your head. That is what you need to see your doctor about - unless you know yourself - then stop doing what gives you headaches! Natural remedies use physical methods such as hydrotherapy that temporarily divert the blood from the head to some other part of the body and give headache relief without doing the body any drug or other damage.

Q. So how do you give a mustard foot bath?

A. Use one tsp. of dry mustard to one or 2 gallons of hot H2O.

If you have undigested food that's fermenting in the stomach & causing a headache, you may induce vomiting with a finger.

At the 1st sign of a migraine headache, try this procedure:

Sit with head hanging between the knees. Have someone else apply a gentle flow of very cold H2O to the base of the skull, allowing it to flow forward through the hair over the scalp for 30 seconds. Catch the run off water in a pan placed between the feet.

Sit up promptly right after the water pouring procedure. Elevate your feet on a stool. Have someone direct a stream of cold water, under pressure if possible to the soles of the feet for 1 ? to 2 minutes. Pour it over the feet if water under pressure is not available. Do this every 2 hrs.

Q. Any other advice before we leave the subject of headaches?

A. If you have chronic headaches see your doctor and ask for a referral to a neurosurgeon or an MD headache specialist to diagnose the cause of your headaches. The all important thing is to know what is causing your headaches. Brain tumors can cause headaches. It needs to be known what the cause of your headache is. See your doctor to get a professional diagnosis before doing too much symptomatic treatment, natural or otherwise.

Insomnia

Q. How much of a problem are sleep disorders in the general population?

A. Sleep complaints are very common in the general population.

According to the report of the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research [see Web Link], as many as 40 million persons in the United States suffer from chronic disorders of sleep and

wakefulness.

Q. So what is your advice to people who can't sleep at night?

A. In proverbs 3:24 When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.

In Ecclesiastes 5:12 The sleep of a labouring man [is] sweet, whether he eat little or much: but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep.

So according to the most reliable text book we possess, sleep disorders are caused by fear - particularly of loosing wealth and inactivity - not enough work exercise.

The initial remedy for sleep disorders would be to deal with your fears. If you fear loss of wealth, give it all to the Lord and tell Him it is His now. Ask Him to take care of it and protect it if He sees best, or let it evaporate or be stolen or whatever, that it is His and you are going to trust Him to do the best with His money or property.

Quote the wonderful promise in 2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

The other sleep disorder remedy is to do hard physical work so you can sleep the sweet sleep of the laboring man. If you do hard head work, you may need to balance the hard head work with some hard muscle exercise such as walking 2 or 3 miles a day with speed and vigor or do some equivalent physical exercise that is enjoyed.

Q. Now sometimes, people get to sleep ok but wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep. Are they treated the same way as people who can't fall asleep?

A. For the person who falls asleep promptly, but cannot stay asleep for a full seven to 8 hrs, start taking deep breaths as soon as you find yourself awake, instead of thinking about problems and responsibilities. Let as much fresh air into the room as you can. Move around in bed, tensing and relaxing

muscles in the face down to the neck & shoulders. Keep some catnip tea at the bedside. This does not leave a hangover. Think peaceful thoughts, not senseless ones like counting sheep.

Memorize and repeat Psalm 127:2 [It is] vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: [for] so he giveth his beloved sleep.

Q. And for those who just can't seem to fall asleep? By the way, how long should it take to fall asleep?

A. Some people can be asleep in 2 minutes. It takes some other normal people almost a half hour. The average is about eight minutes. For those with this problem, one of the best things that can be done is spending at least 1 hour per day outdoors in brisk labor or sports. This should be done early in the day, not just before trying to go to sleep. The physical exercise will interfere with your ability to fall to sleep.

Do not eat a heavy, late supper. If you eat anything at all in the evening, use only whole grain breads, cereals or fruit.

Try to have a regular bedtime. This goes a long way to promoting good sleep.

Do not use stimulating beverages such as coffee, tea, colas & chocolate. They affect your nervous system adversely.

Rheumatism

Q. What is rheumatism?

A. Rheumatism is pain and stiffness in the bones and joints that is aggravated by cold and tends to feel better by warmth.

Q. What is the cause of aches and pains called rheumatism?

A. The age-related degenerative joint disease called osteo-arthritis is the commonest cause of rheumatism.

Q. What home remedies are there for rheumatism?

A. There are many products on the market for arthritis. The more products there are, the more proof that is that none of the products work perfectly for everybody. If one product worked for everyone that product would soon dominate the market and be used by everybody. There is no such product. We are not into selling products. We are into sharing how the body works and what to do to co-operate with the healing properties God has put in our bodies and in the products of the field and garden that are free to all who will take the trouble of availing themselves of them.

Q. So what are the products of nature and the garden that help with rheumatism?

A. Prostaglandin (PG) E1 plays a major role in the regulation of thymus development and T lymphocyte function. The production of PGE1 is dependent on nutritional factors with linoleic acid, gamma-linolenic acid, pyridoxine, zinc and vitamin C playing key roles. Inadequate intake of any one of these will lead to inadequate PGE1 formation and defective T lymphocyte function. Megadoses of any one are likely to be only minimally effective in the absence of adequate intakes of the others. By careful attention to diet it should be possible to activate T lymphocyte function in the large number of diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, various auto-immune diseases, multiple sclerosis, and cancer in which such function is defective.

Q. What foods and garden products have linoleic acid, gamma-linolenic acid, pyridoxine, zinc and vitamin C?

A. Linoleic acid occurs mainly in plant oils; it comprises 77% and 56% of the fatty acids of safflower oil and soybean oil, respectively. Linoleic acid is known at Omega 6 fatty acid. Prostaglandin E1 is also produced by oleic acid sources e.g. olives, avocados. Prostaglandin E1 restrains inflammation. That means that it makes the rheumatism feel better.

Q. What about the Omega 3 fatty acid?

A. Prostglandin E3 is produced in the body omega 3 sources e.g. flax seeds, walnuts, soy beans, salads. Prostaglandin E1 and E3 both restrain inflammation which means that they decrease pain and stiffness of rheumatism.

Q. Is what you are saying is that the research has shown that if you eat olives, avocados, safflower, walnuts, flax seeds and soybeans that rheumatism will improve? And eating foods with vitamin B6 and vitamin C and zinc will make rheumatism better?

A. That is what the research has shown.

Q. Then why dosen’t everybody with rheumatism eat lots of those foods?

A. I think that most people just don’t know how much help they would get from those foods. The other reason is that most people don’t know that there is also prostaglandin E1 that increases inflammation.

Q. What would be the affect of eating foods that increase the body production of prostaglandin E1?

A. Blood clots, muscle spasms, and increased inflammation in the body that would increase the pain and stiffness from rheumatism.

Q. Why would anybody want to eat food that caused all that pain and suffering?

A. Again, I believe that is lack of knowledge. The Scripture says that "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge".

Q. What kinds of foods contain the fats that the body makes prostaglandin E1 from that increases blood clots, muscle spasms and increased joint pain and stiffness of rheumatism?

A. Do you really want to know?

Q. Why would I not want to know?

A. Well, let me tell you what foods increase blood clots, muscle spasms and increase joint pain and stiffness first, and then maybe you will understand why people may not want to hear about this. These foods are all from non-plant sources. These foods are bacon, beef, turkey, chicken, and seafoods.

Q. So it sounds un-American to tell the bad effects that bacon, beef, turkey, chicken, seafoods have!

A. You have it!

Q. Are there any people who have turned away from eating bacon, beef, turkey, chicken, and seafoods and have eaten more plant foods such as olives, avocados, safflower, walnuts, flax seeds and soybeans and had their joint pains and joint stiffness go away?

A. Everybody across the board who has done that has experienced great improvement in their rheumatism.

Q. So it is really true!

A. The only way to believe is to do what God says to do in connection with Himself: "O, taste and see that the Lord is good."

Pastor M

Some years ago, Dr Arnott and I had a bi-weekly hour radio talk show program on one of the local stations in Seattle for a few of months. The first visit to see the doctor was offered free in an attempt to get patients to come and see us. One of the first patients that came to the clinic as a result of hearing us on the radio was a Baptist minister 56 years of age. He had despaired of life. He was grossly overweight at 5'6" weighing 255 lbs. He could not sleep without assistance from a machine to help him breath. He had severe diabetes and was on 200 units of insulin daily. He had had severe three vessel coronary artery disease and had suffered a heart attack a couple of years ago. He had cerebrovascular disease and had a stroke in 1990. His blood pressure was 170/90 while taking two blood pressure medications. His ankles were swollen while taking 120 mg of lasix twice a day. He had so much fatigue that he was disabled. He was taking 11 medications including insulin and he knew that he was getting worse. He had medically retired from his church pastorate in order to go onto to welfare to await his end. He came into the clinic and saw Dr. Arnott with the question: "Can you do anything for me?"

If this pastor had come to Jesus, could Jesus have been able to anything for him? Yes! you all say. This man came to Dr. Arnott - could he do anything for him? Some say "Yes", some say "No"! And some just sit and listen! Well, Dr Arnott did what each of you could do. Dr Arnott prayed with this pastor and told him to look to Jesus. Now this pastor had been coming to Jesus and praying to Jesus for years and he just kept getting sicker and sicker until now he realized that he was at the end of the road. Was there anything else that Dr. Arnott could do? Is there anything else that you could do for your sick neighbor or friend or relative – perhaps ourselves? Well, that depends upon your knowledge and belief. If you believe the prevailing idea that medical science has a pill for every disease, then you probably don’t think that you could do anything, because you may not have that pill knowledge, license and training. It is written in Hosea 4:6 "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge." Well, Dr. Arnott had knowledge of what to do. Did he get the knowledge of what to do in medical school? Yes and no. Dr. Arnott got knowledge of what to do mostly from the "red books". Have you heard of the "red books"? Do you have any "red books"? Are the books you have "red" or "read" books?

This pastor was in dead earnest. He had been brought by his driver from about one hour's distance to see Dr. Arnott. Well, Dr Arnott told him to drink more water in spite of the swelling of his ankles. He told him to eat whole, unrefined, plant foods. He told him to exercise to the maximum of his capacity. Dr Arnott had some blood drawn to measure his sugar, triglycerides, and cholesterol levels. And the man left with hope in his heart and a determination to do what he had been told to do. And beloved, this dear man did what he had been told would give him life. The next visit just three weeks later revealed a different man. Before the first visit he could not walk from the wheelchair to the bathroom without having chest pain. Now he was walking a block with no chest pain. He had lost about 15 lbs. weight in three weeks and what was so impressive to the Baptist pastor was that he felt so much energy that he had not felt since he was a teenager. By the next visit, he told Dr Arnott that he had cancelled his medical retirement plans and had accepted a call to another church and was feeling well again with no chest pain, no shortness of breath and energy like he had as a young person. The cook that was with the pastor that looked after the pastor said that he had begun to eat what he was cooking for the pastor and that he felt more energy and that he had lost weight. The blood sugar levels came down so much that the pastor went off insulin. His blood cholesterol and fat levels came down. This was several years ago. Today this pastor has a new church and is working to the glory of God. He is not medically retired. He is not living on welfare. His blood cholesterol dropped from 200 down to 148 in 6 months. Off insulin his blood sugars ran fasting between 90 and 105. Still on blood pressure medication, his blood pressure came down to 125/78. Off his Lasix his ankle swelling was gone. He lost 76 lbs. weight. His chest measurement went from 52" to 44". His waist measurements went from 48 to 38". Six months later he was running 20-30 minutes a day; walking one hour/day, and lifting weights 1? hours/day. This reminds me of what Pharoh’s magicians said to him after failing to mimic the third plague: "This is the finger of God".
